Delivering Fare Collection at Scale: How Masabi is Supporting the Shift to Account-Based Ticketing and Open Payments

Delivering complex fare collection systems is never simple—especially when dozens of agencies are moving to a shared, enterprise-grade platform at the same time.

In the last few years, Masabi experienced exactly that: an extraordinary wave of growth as agencies of all sizes made the shift from legacy systems to our SaaS-based Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) platform supporting smart cards, mobile and open payments.

That rapid demand created growing pains. With multiple full-service deployments running in parallel across North America, Europe, and beyond, scaling up our delivery capacity quickly—and sustainably—wasn’t easy.

But we met the challenge head-on.

We restructured teams, expanded resources, improved cross-functional collaboration, and sharpened our project delivery frameworks. We invested in more capacity, streamlined our delivery approach, and strengthened alignment across Delivery, Product, Account Management, and Support. As a result, we've cracked the code on delivering complex projects at scale—without compromising quality.

Now, with stronger foundations and lessons learned, we’ve proven that Masabi can not only keep pace with market demand but lead the industry in fast, successful launches.

Delivery at Scale: From Complexity to Execution

Delivering 43 major project upgrades in a single year isn’t just about technology—it’s about process, structure, and a relentless focus on execution. This level of scale required significant investment and transformation across our business, from growing our professional services and delivery teams to aligning product, engineering, and account management around a shared commitment to customer outcomes.

We’ve built a delivery engine that combines technical excellence with proven project management discipline, leveraging global experience and repeatable frameworks that enable agencies to go live faster and with confidence.

Some highlights from 2024 include:

  • Madison Metro Transit: Went live with a full Account-Based Ticketing system, integrating mobile, smartcards, stored value, and fare capping, in under 9 months from project start to public launch.
  • LA World Airports (LAWA): Deployed a complete Open Payments implementation in just 18 weeks, transforming access to transit at one of the busiest travel hubs in the U.S.
  • LA Metro: Implemented barcode ticketing for concerts and events, with the ticketing functionality delivered in just 14 days through Masabi’s APIs.

Each of these projects had its own challenges—tight deadlines, complex integrations, high passenger expectations—but with the right team, tools, and collaboration, success was achieved at speed and scale.

Built for Demand: Scaling with Confidence

The ability to deliver quickly and at scale didn’t happen by chance. In response to growing global demand for modern fare collection, particularly the shift to SaaS Platforms, Account-Based Ticketing and Open Payments - we’ve invested heavily in growing and strengthening our teams.

We expanded our Delivery & Project Management functions, bringing in experienced transit specialists and agile delivery leaders to drive complex implementations with consistency.

Our Account Management team now works more closely than ever with delivery, product, and support to ensure a smooth handover from implementation to operation, and a long-term roadmap for growth.
We introduced enhanced training, support, and enablement processes to help agencies onboard staff and passengers quickly, reducing friction and maximizing adoption.

This coordinated model allows us to handle multiple large-scale deployments in parallel, without compromising on quality or stakeholder experience.

Supporting the Shift to ABT + Open Payments

The market momentum behind ABT and Open Payments continues to grow—particularly among larger agencies who have outgrown the constraints of card-based systems. What’s changing is the level of confidence agencies now have in adopting these modern solutions.

Why? Because they’ve seen it work.

At Masabi, we’re not just delivering ABT platforms—we’re helping agencies:

  • Transition from cash and legacy media to Account-Based systems supporting mobile, smartcards, contactless bank cards, and more
  • Roll out stored value and fare capping to make fares fairer and simpler
  • Integrate across modes, operators, and retail channels for seamless rider experiences
  • Maintain ownership of policy and pricing, while benefiting from a shared, secure, and always-evolving technology stack
  • Power access to data for enhanced reporting and analytics.
  • Connect to 3rd-party systems and services using our advanced Open Platform utilizing APIs, SDKs and Pre-integrated solutions (a huge benefit of SaaS platforms)

And we’re doing it faster and more predictably than traditional build-to-own models ever could.

Looking Ahead: More to Come!

With demand showing no signs of slowing down, 2025 and 2026 are set to be record-breaking years. We’re already planning and scoping for dozens of new implementations, as more agencies—large and small—turn to Masabi for:

  • Enterprise-grade fare collection with rapid time to value
  • A modular, open platform ready to integrate with validators, ticketing apps, and mobility services
  • Proven experience in launching ABT, Open Payments, and multimodal solutions

We know that speed without quality is a false win. That’s why our commitment is not just to launching fast, but to launching well—in close partnership with the agency, with the tools, training, and support in place to ensure long-term success.

Conclusion

Delivering fare collection systems at scale isn’t easy, but it’s what agencies need as they modernize, grow, and adapt to evolving rider needs. Masabi has shown it’s not only possible - but achievable, repeatable, and reliable.

If your agency is considering the shift to ABT, Open Payments, or a modular fare collection model, we’re ready to help. With experience across cities and continents, and a delivery model built for speed and quality, Masabi is the partner to help you get there - fast, and with confidence.
