GLTC Launches Account-Based Ticketing with Masabi, Delivering Best Fare Pricing and Seamless Travel

The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company (GLTC) and Masabi announced the launch of Account-Based Ticketing (ABT) across GLTC’s bus network. The new system gives riders access to the best possible fare for every journey, and delivers faster boarding, greater flexibility and more convenient ways to pay.

The launch builds on GLTC’s mobile ticketing rollout with Masabi in 2024 and introduces a fully account-based fare system available through the FlexFare white-label app, the Transit app, and new FlexFare smartcards. With ABT, riders no longer need to decide which ticket or pass to buy in advance, with fares automatically calculated and capped at the best daily or monthly price, including discounted fares for eligible riders.

Fare capping ensures that riders using FlexFare always receive the lowest available fare for their travel, whether they ride occasionally or multiple times a day. Regular and discounted day and monthly passes are applied automatically, removing any uncertainty and making public transit more equitable and accessible for everyone.

Riders can use the FlexFare app or Transit app, tap a FlexFare smartcard, or load funds through a secure online web portal. For added accessibility, riders can also add value to their accounts with cash at select retail locations. Through the web portal, riders can link their card to an account, view travel history, manage balances, and ensure they receive the correct fare or discount.

“This launch represents a major step forward in making transit in Lynchburg easier, faster, and more accessible,” said Josh Moore, General Manager at GLTC. “With FlexFare, our riders can simply tap and ride, knowing they’ll always pay the best fare available. By offering multiple payment options, and including retail locations for cash loading, we’re making sure everyone in our community can take advantage of a modern, convenient transit system.”

“Account-Based Ticketing removes complexity for riders and gives agencies the flexibility to deliver fair, inclusive pricing,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO at Masabi. “With the launch of ABT with fare capping, smartcards, and app-based payments, GLTC is ensuring that riders benefit from the most convenient and accessible fare system possible, one that supports fast boarding, reduces friction, and guarantees the best price every time.”

Lynchburg

GLTC provides bus service throughout the City of Lynchburg, serving a population of more than 80,000 residents across 72 square miles. The new FlexFare system supports GLTC’s mission to deliver reliable, affordable mobility while removing barriers to transit use for both everyday and occasional riders.

The deployment is powered by Masabi’s Justride platform, delivering a single, cloud-native back office that supports Account-Based Ticketing, mobile ticketing, smartcards, and retail cash loading through one integrated system. The project was delivered in partnership with Systrans, an Equans company, continuing a successful collaboration announced during the initial contract award.
