Masabi, Mastercard and UniCredit Bank Deliver City-Wide Mobile Ticketing to Bucharest STB

Global Leader in Mobile Ticketing Partnering with Mastercard, UniCredit Bank and STB to Simplify Transport in Romanian Capital

Bucharest, Romania 28th January 2020. Masabi, the company bringing Fare Payments-as-a-Service to public transport, today announced that it has launched the BPay mobile ticketing app for Societatea de Transport Bucuresti (STB) across the Romanian capital city, working in conjunction with its partners Mastercard and UniCredit Bank. The app is available for download from both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The multi-lingual BPay app allows for cashless travel on Urban, Express, Regional and City Bus Tour routes with daily, weekly, fortnightly and monthly tickets all offered. The app removes the need for passengers to have the correct change to travel and also includes access to trip planning services.

“We started, a few years ago, a plan for Bucharest to become a Smart City and this new, modern paying instrument for the public transport is part of it” said Gabriela Firea, The General Mayor of Bucharest. “Our goal is to offer to all the people who travel in Bucharest innovative technology that provides operational benefits as well as simplifying the transport experience for our passengers. This is what we do by using Masabi’s Justride technology, which has been deployment-proven in cities across the world.”

“With the launch of BPay, traveling in Bucharest has never been so easy,” said Mr. Andrei George Creci, General Manager of STB. “Masabi’s Justride technology has been deployment-proven in cities across the world, and offers innovative technology that provides operational benefits as well as simplifying the transport experience for our passengers. We have been delighted with the rollout process to date, and look forward to continuing to work with the Masabi team.”

“Across the globe Masabi continues to set the pace for deployments and innovation in transport fare payments. The addition of Bucharest to the Justride family marks yet another capital city adopting the technology to make access to public transport quick and easy for both everyday commuters and tourists,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO of Masabi. “Working in conjunction with our partners Mastercard, UniCredit Bank, STB and Bucharest City Hall, we are delighted to be bringing cutting edge ticketing innovation to Romania.”

“This latest deployment with Masabi in Bucharest marks yet another milestone in our long-     standing partnership and shared commitment to remove the barriers that slow cities down,” said Matt Blanks, Head of Global Transit, Mastercard. “By combining our expertise and resources, we can address the challenges cities and transit agencies face, enabling them to deploy quick and simple solutions that improve the daily lives of the communities that they serve.”

“We are delighted to be part of this initiative, together with Masabi and Mastercard. The launch of the BPay application, further enforces our position as an innovative player and promoter of digital trends in the banking industry. In the age of technology, our innovation projects are inspired by the day-to-day life of the people around us and strive to create solutions that matter to them”, said Gabriel Jeflea, Global Transactional Banking Director, UniCredit Bank.

On target to exceed $1bn in annual transport ticketing sales over the coming year, Masabi’s Justride is the world’s leading and most widely deployed mobile ticketing platform and removes the need for passengers to wait in line to buy a ticket. By using a Fare Payments platform transport authorities and operators can move away from expensive and bespoke fare collection systems which quickly become outdated and move to a platform which is quick to deploy, constantly updating with new functionality and helps reduce the overall cost of fare payments, meaning cities can put more money back into running services for citizens. As part of the deployment, Justride will be using Mastercard Payment Gateway Services to enable simple, safe and secure in-app digital payments. Acquiring bank services are being supplied by UniCredit Bank.
