Jackson Wyoming’s Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit (START) Launches Next-Generation Mobile Ticketing System with Transit App, Powered by Masabi

Transit agency for Jackson, WY launches contactless mobile ticketing solution enabling riders to buy tickets anytime, anywhere

Southern Teton Area Rapid Transit (START), the transit agency serving the Town of Jackson, Wyoming and the surrounding areas launched a  new contactless mobile ticketing solution powered by Masabi and the Transit app. The next-generation mobile ticketing system uses Masabi’s Justride platform to enable riders to purchase tickets for START services anytime, anywhere, through the Transit app. START serves more than 800,000 riders a year, serving both residents and visitors.

From today, riders on the START network will have access to an all-in-one experience in the Transit app, an application that many already use, combining mobile ticketing with trip planning and real-time vehicle tracking.

Masabi has also installed validation units running its Justride Inspect software on START buses, meaning passengers can simply scan their phone when boarding, validating their pass in the Transit app. The agency’s new “Plan. Pay. Ride.” ticketing process will help to speed up boarding times, making services more efficient for riders, while providing START with valuable data insights enabling smarter decisions and improved services in the future.

In the future, Masabi will provide START smart cards and deploy a next-generation Account-Based Ticketing system across the entire START network, powered by the Justride platform, further improving the customer experience. Passengers will no longer need to select fares or purchase tickets before boarding and instead simply tap their mobile devices or smart cards to travel, helping speed up boarding times.

“As one of the United States’ premier winter sports destinations, how Jackson and the surrounding area presents itself to visitors is vital,” said Bruce Abel, Transit Director at START. “This partnership with Masabi and the Transit app sees considerable improvements to our reliability and consistency of service delivery, putting more information into riders’ hands than ever before and making purchasing tickets and boarding START buses as easy as Plan. Pay. Ride.”

“Towns and cities across America are deploying solutions that resolve the inconveniences and time-consuming task management elements involved in delivering transit services,” said Brian Zanghi, CEO at Masabi. “We’re delighted to be providing these to one of the most recognizable tourist destinations in the United States. This implementation of a market-leading ticketing solution alongside our deployment-proven partners at Transit means that START riders will now have access to cutting-edge ticketing and passenger information, delivering a practical Mobility as a Service (MaaS) experience.”

“At Transit, our top priority is giving agencies the support they need to deliver reliable, top-notch service,” said David Block-Schachter, CBO at Transit. “We’re excited to work with START and Masabi to deploy solutions that will not just improve the rider experience, but also increase equity and access for riders across the Southern Teton area.”

START joins more than 30 agencies across North America that have made it easier for their riders to use ticketing and passenger information services by offering a best-in-class ticketing and app experience with Transit and Masabi. The service is available to agencies of all sizes and can be deployed as a stand-alone app or alongside existing mobile ticketing options.
